Vital Charlton understands that club representatives are in discussions with David Thompson over a possible move to The Valley.

Alan Pardew is currently away with the squad in Spain as the boys prepare for their assault on the Championship. However the Addicks boss is in close contact with officials at The Valley as the money men try and thrash out a deal for Thommo.

Skysports reported earlier this week that Thompson is looking to join a Championship club after being released in the summer by Bolton Wanderers.

It now seems the club have stolen a march on their rivals and talks are already at an advanced stage.

The 29-year-old has played for Swindon, Liverpool, Coventry, Blackburn, Wigan, Portsmouth and Bolton since his career began back in August 1996.

One point for concern is that the player is very injury prone and the club are looking to install a get out clause for both parties should they agree a deal but Thompson face a long injury lay off.
