Here’s some news we have not all been expecting to be coming out right now, but at least it’s good news for all us Charlton fans, we can rejoice in the club’s decision to renew Lyle Taylor’s contract which is up at the end of next season.
THE FACTS
Whilst the deal may not have been signed yet it is very likely Lyle Taylor will sign on the dotted line. Taylor has become a fan favourite this season which led to him winning the player of the year for 2019, Taylor does love the club and looks like any deal offered may be received with open arms.
Bowyer spoke with the South London Press about the interest Taylor is attracting from other clubs, here is what he had to say.
“Yeah, I think that clubs will come in for him, but the good thing on our side is that he loves it here. He is in London and playing in the Championship. They are three things that are a positive for us.
“We’re definitely going to be offering Lyle a new deal. It is one of those situations where it is going to be Lyle’s decision – whether it is going to be attractive enough for him to sign it.”
MY OPINION
This is great news, we need to keep our players on long-term contracts because we will learn the hard way this summer about letting players contracts run down, potential candidates for that are Patrick Bauer and Joe Aribo and losing either one of them will be a shocking blow to the team.
I think once we have the players who are out of contract signed back on we should look at those who have just a year left to run on their deals, that way we can secure a future from our core squad and the players we want to keep.
I can’t stress this enough if we want to do well we need to get those players signed on long-term deals otherwise we may just take a very unnecessary step back just like our relegation from the Championship was three years ago.

Why we gave a two year deal I don’t know. Insane. If you are going to offer two years it needs to be with an option for the club to extend to a third to protect yourself if the player becomes a big hit #cafc

Taylor has 12 months to run on his current deal. Coming off a red-hot season – 25 goals and 12 assists. At 29 – at his peak – going to be interesting to see what comes next. #cafc
