A non-contract basis deal saw Bally Smart come to Charlton a couple of weeks ago, however his stay with The Addicks could be a short one.

Smart was on the bench for our League 1 opener against Bournemouth, played for an hour against Shrewsbury in the Carling Cup and also featured for the reserves on Tuesday but Phil Parkinson isn’t entirely convinced that he has a future at SE7.

Parkinson can see some promise in him, however a contract isn’t likely to be offered anytime soon and he wouldn’t stand in his way if someone else offered him one, Parkinson told The News Shopper: “Bally Smart is still training with us.

“He has still got a bit of work to do in my eyes to convince us he is worth a contract but we will continue to monitor him.

“I`ve spoken to him and his agent and told him the situation that we are not in a position to do anything yet and if he did get offered a contract elsewhere he should take it.

“But in the meantime, he can stay here and work to impress by playing in the reserve games and you never know what that might lead to.”

On a non-contract deal we’ve not really got a lot to lose so it’s a win win situation in many ways, if Smart isn’t considered good enough then it’s best not to offer out a contract when we’ve got to be especially careful about who we dish them out to.
