Respect Must be Earned

Alan Pardew has said what plenty of us have been thinking, and saying, for sometime. The respect that referees are supposed to get these days must be earned.

The Football Association introduced the “Respect” campaign over the summer but following Karl Evans’ performance over the weekend, which drew criticism from both Pardew and Nottingham Forest boss Colin Calderwood, Pardew has questioned how this be work if this respect is not earned, telling BBC London 94.9: “We try to respect this Respect programme but what are you to do?

“Do we need to put the referee under pressure to make him give decisions that are the right ones?”

Evans failed to award a straight red card when few would’ve argued with it, didn’t give what Pardew saw as a penalty and made some other dubious calls, while Calderwood thought that the sending off his player did get for two bookings was wrong, Pardew added: “My teams play with discipline.

“We won’t change at this time but we’re going to have to review what happens to this referee and I’ll be interested to see what the report says and where he is next week.”

Fully with Pardew here, referees should be respected but if they aren’t doing what they should be doing to earn this how can we respect them? This most definitely must be something that is earned!
