Looking back on a remarkable day

|

I am so happy to be writing this because WE DONE IT! Charlton Athletic will officially be playing football in the Championship next season, it has been a truly remarkable season in SE7 ending at the famous Wembley Stadium where 21 years ago we managed to beat Sunderland in the playoff final on penalties after an epic 4-4 draw. Patrick Bauer was the man who sealed it for us right at the death after his first header was blocked by Flanagan and then thankfully VERY thankfully Bauer managed to get his foot on the end of it and bury it in the back of the net. What a finale to a fantastic season.

One thing that happened on a personal level for myself was a very spiritual thing, I was holding my dad’s chain which I wear all the time, unfortunately, he passed away 11 years ago and he was at the 98 final, the free-kick which led up to our second goal was just being prepared and I was holding on to that chain that I believe he even wore on that day and I was saying “come on dad if you’re going to do something do it now” and then about 20 seconds later the BFG scores the winner. I think it was safe to say I was an emotional wreck the tears were flowing and the joy was glowing, but what a moment that was for myself and the club. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

Now we look ahead to next season and I really hope Bowyer signs a new contract, look at what he has done with no money just give him what he wants surely this is the manager that Roland always wanted, he knows how to get by on the bare minimum and can grind out the results we need. Same goes with all the players, just give them what they want the wages are going to be a lot higher now we are in the Championship if Roland does not want to pay out then sell the club to someone who does and leave football for good because as Mark Saggers said on Talk Sport “we are not missing you”.
