Lee Bowyer gives positive assessment of 26-year old

Football finally returned yesterday and it returned with a win as Charlton Athletic swept aside relegation rivals Hull City 1-0 in a tense showdown at the KCOM Stadium on Saturday afternoon, however, there was one man playing slightly out of position and that was Deji Oshilaja.

Can you get 12/12 on this Charlton History Quiz? I bet you can’t, but feel free to prove me wrong!

Who was Charlton's first-ever manager?

I have to say it was a very humbling experience seeing Charlton play again and Deji was a big part of that yesterday, I feel he had a pretty good game he got himself into dangerous areas by going up and down the channels, it was like he added some much-needed brawn on the wings and he did a decent job I think.

Deji was playing in left-back which as we know is not his strongest position in the back four as he normally gets picked as a center-back or right-back, but he definitely offered us a lot of speed and power on the left-wing and also gave himself a lot of opportunities to cross to ball and I remember he also almost set up a goal but it ended up getting blocked before it reached his man.

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer spoke after the game in his post-match press conference about Deji Oshilaja and here is what he had to say

“Deji was very good. Both their wingers are all left-footed, so they are always going to drive inside, which is Deji’s stronger foot. That was a big part of why he played there today and I know what he gives me going forward. I remember Forest at home, ok he played right back then, but he gave us an outlet.

“Albie [on the left of midfield] would naturally be narrow, which left a space for Deji, which I know he is good at. We worked on it a bit on Tuesday and he was excellent. Deji grabbed that opportunity, you need people to step up and he did that.”

If Deji can keep up his performances to that quality every game then I’m sure he will become a fan favorite very quickly, he offered a lot yesterday and I’m really proud of his performance and he should be very confident going into the QPR game after playing like that.

We still have eight cup finals to play and everything can change in this league so quickly, but after that 1-0 boost the lads worked hard for yesterday I’m sure the boys are buzzing with confidence so hopefully, they take that into the next game.
