Charlton could be spending money to sign playmaker from League One rivals

|

Under this regime, I never thought we would be spending money to sign a player, but The Addicks do indeed look to be on the horizon of signing Alex Gilbey from Milton Keynes Dons who finished 19th in League One last season after it was prematurely brought to an end due to the Coronavirus.

Can you get 25/25 on this former Charlton players quiz? I bet you can’t, but feel free to prove me wrong!

Who is this?

Alex Gilbey hails from Dagenham in East London so we are not far from his home town, so it looks like a move here might suit him well.

The 25-year old won MK Dons player of the year last season for the second year running as he went on to score 5 goals in 30 appearances plus providing 2 assists.

According to Richard Cawley from The South London Press a transfer fee will be involved in this deal, but with Charlton under a transfer embargo how are we even allowed to get this far?

A report was posted earlier on today by Football Insider claiming that Gilbey is at the medical stage of the deal and a fee has been agreed, but with the transfer embargo still hovering over Charlton we should take this news with a pinch of salt, and if we do end up signing Gilbey will we have to face the “consequences” from the EFL?

I have also heard that we have been capped on what we can spend rather than a complete transfer embargo, but we have also heard the words “registration embargo” which to my understanding would stop us from signing anyone on a contract until the embargo was lifted so this whole business is really starting to get confusing, we might need some clarity on that as many sources say different things.

We certainly need someone to fill that void that Josh Cullen has left, and I think he could be our man, but with the restrictions, we have for money and the embargo the chances of this getting past the EFL feel slim to me.
