Ben Purrington: “I think we’ve got more than enough to stay in the Championship and compete”

|

Charlton Athletic have kicked off the 2019/20 campaign in style as we battled to a hard-fought away win at Ewood Park, never an easy place for the Addicks to go but we put a big hurdle behind us as we picked up our first three points of the season.

The first goal came from Ben Purrington as he sprinted his way from left-back to get into position for Jonny Williams’ brilliant dinking cross as Ben threw himself at the ball to put the Addicks 1-0 ahead and give himself two goals in two games. Speaking with the News Shopper Ben had this to say after he was asked whether the team use predictions as motivation

“I don’t think you can really look into it too much, obviously we’ve come up from the league below but you can see the quality that we have in the team.

“I think we’ve got more than enough to stay in the Championship and compete. Blackburn were a good team last year, they finished strongly, have got some good players and paid a lot of money for some of them.”

One thing I love about this team is that they are all fearless, hard-working young men and I couldn’t be any prouder as a supporter than I am right now. They have stepped up to the mark and got a brilliant result away from home shutting all the doubters up for now, some of them even our own fans! All we got to do is believe in this team and good things will come.

Purrington also spoke about his goal and tactical fluidity

“I’ve always seen myself as a left-back but, in order to play, you have to be able to adapt into the other positions. It’s one of those where I have to pick and choose when I could go, and luckily enough it was right place, right time to get the goal.”

I can see Ben turning into a player that likes to get forward and if he’s good enough I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t turn him into a winger if his crossing, shooting and attacking mind gets any better. Obviously, we have to be realistic with Ben we can’t just expect that from him but saying that the last two games he has looked very comfortable in that style of play.

Ben is turning into a proper Charlton player and I hope he stays here for years to come because he definitely has a bright future ahead of him.
