Addicks Silence Bluebirds

Alan Pardew made just the one change from the side that was beaten by Burnley on Saturday, Lloyd Sam (who had come on) started in place of Luke Varney who was named as a substitute for the match with Cardiff at Ninian Park.

A largely uneventful first thirty two minutes past with little goalmouth action, Chris Iwelumo headed wide and Steven Thompson drove in an effort for the Bluebirds that Nicky Weaver dealt with easily then suddenly the Addicks took the lead from nothing. Andy Reid’s corner came out to Matt Holland and he expertly drove home into the corner of the net from twenty-five yards to put the Addicks ahead.

Both Steven Thompson and Chris Gunter did both shot wide for the Bluebird before half time but these thirteen minutes (plus injury time) before the break had seen the Addicks remain in control and they went in at the break one up.

The second half started how the first half had really and for more well over twenty minutes neither goalkeeper was tested, but the Addicks remained in the lead which was ultimately the most important thing, the closest either side came really was Peter Whittingham’s twenty five yard curling effort, but even that wasn’t troubling Nicky weaver (who hadn’t and wouldn’t really be troubled at all.)

At an identical stage in the second half as it was in the first half the most notable action of the half happened again. Darren Purse fell then pulled down Darren Ambrose and a penalty was given. Skipper Andy Reid had the chance to wrap up the victory from the spot and he made no mistake.

Steven Thompson had a header that went wide and also shot over for the Bluebirds, with Sam Sodje also shooting over in injury time between the two Steven Thompson efforts but that was it and the Addicks put the recent back to back home defeats behind them to secure a fourth straight away win, and a much needed win, also completing the double over their opponents in the process.

Cardiff rarely threatened did they and look a team in realy trouble. The Addicks might not have really done that much, but we did enough to win and that is the main thing, we were on control when it mattered. It’s good to be back to winning ways!

Yes, he always has been and always will be. He will also make a great manager one day I think.
