Trialist’s Have The Chance To Impress

Charlton have a number of trialists at the club at the moment as Phil Parkinson uses the “try before you buy” approach this pre-season.

The likes of Ross Kitteridge (goalkeeper), Etienne Esajas, Lee Sawyer and James Mulley (all midfielders) and Guillem Bauza and Gunnar Thorvaldsson (both strikers) have been with the club so far and featured in our opening pre-season friendly defeat at AFC Wimbledon.

They’ll get further chances to impress, however Phil Parkinson is in no hurry to make a decision on any of them, Parkinson told The South London Press: “There is no timescale for how long we keep the trialists.

“They`re out of contract and they`ve got a chance here but it will be up to us to make decisions about them.”

It makes sense to look at these players for as long as possible. Most, if from a lower level definitely (unless they were too good to stay where they were) will not be any improvement on what we have but there is always the chance of finding some quality. It’s not always the individual ability either, the ability to fit into the squad and the team could make a difference to the outcome of the trial as well.

I have just retrieved my boots from the loft. After playing in the next friendly, I will, at least, be able to say that I had a trial with Charlton! Oh bugger, so will the rest of the World! I might as well put them back.

Nothing ventured nothing gained and all that.

It might be a trial watching Charlton next season unless we either find a striker or get 2 penalties in each game…
