Simply Not Good Enough!

Our defeat to Colchester on New Years Day simply wasn’t good enough, and this is something that Alan Pardew completely agrees with.

Losing to the U’s at the Valley is not the type of result that feels you with much optimism that we can bounce straight back to the Premier League at the first attempt and Alan Pardew was not happy at all, he told the Addicks website: “I was disappointed with the whole day. I was really, really disappointed with how we started the game. Really disappointed. It wasn’t what we were looking for.

“I thought we started slowly, we never really secured their forward line, and we ended up doing exactly what we did at Colchester. We gave them a two-goal lead and we were always in trouble.

“I’m not exactly sure why that was, was it nervousness due to our recent home form, or the pressure of playing the team at the bottom of the league, maybe it was number of factors. We wanted to start with a high tempo, but we didn’t do that.

“We had a nervous ground that wasn’t happy – and quite rightly so – and I thought we started to look really nervous at that point. We were lacking positivity on the pitch.”

Despite this latest defeat (after two goals from former Addicks striker Kevin Lisbie) Alan Pardew remains positive about our own promotion chances: “We’ve lost some significant players this season, we’ve played with 10 men on five occasions, and we’re still in and around the promotion places,” Alan Pardew added.

“We’ve got where we are through organisation and character, the two things that probably let us down today.”

This was not the way we wanted to start the New Year, and although there is still a long way to go this season for the first time I have become a little concerned about our ability to gain promotion this season?

We are losing far too many games at home and losing to sides that we shouldn’t be losing to if we want to go straight back up, and if we don’t I do worry for our long-term future.

We can’t keep losing matches at home, that much is clear, and we certainly can’t keep losing to sides that we shouldn’t be losing to if we want to go up (not being disrespectful to the U’s.) We are still in the pack, but sooner or later others will start pulling away if we keep slipping up.

Dead right CA! My bet on Charlton to win the Championship is now looking decidedly dodgy. At the moment we are not good enough to even consider promotion. We cannot keep relying on the failures and inconsistency of other teams. The time has now come for our players to stand up and be counted.

Was a big shock too me that we came there and took all three points, only hope it can start a revival for the U’s. To be honest you should be beating teams like Colchester at home but you will still go up.

Colchester always play better against the bigger teams and I was pleased with the win, however I wish you the best and hope that you do make it this year!

Thank-you peeps, all the best to the U’s also. We have to turn things round and quickly (we seem to be saying this all the time don’t we!)
