Player Ratings from Charlton’s fantastic win against Brentford

|

Charlton defeated London rivals Brentford 1-0 with their defenders showing incredible bravery to keep their side in front.

Conor Gallagher’s third goal of the season was enough for the Addicks, but it was the warriors of Charlton’s defence that kept the Bees’ onslaught at bay and continued their unbeaten start to 2019/20.

Here are my player ratings of the Charlton team after yesterday’s game:

Dillon Phillips – 6

Was called into action multiple times towards the end of the game and pulled off three crucial saves in the final ten minutes. His distribution is what lets him down. His kicking and handling is still quite suspect and he threw the ball away a couple of times. Ultimately his saves proved vital in giving us the three points.

Deji Oshilaja – 5

Limped off the pitch just past the half hour mark, but he was getting stuck in and made some good challenges. Let’s hope the injury is not too serious.

Tom Lockyer – 8

Another outstanding performance from the Welsh international. Made some absolutely brilliant tackles, including a vital challenge towards the end of the game. He’s going to be a nightmare for attackers this season. He wins Man Of The Match without a doubt.

Jason Pearce – 7

Returned to the starting 11 in outstanding fashion. Put in some big challenges and threw himself in front of goal to prevent a Brentford equalizer. A warrior’s display from the Skipper.

Ben Purrington – 7

I actually saw him on the pitch today, which is a good start! Another defender who showed grit and determination to keep the Bees out and he got forward well. Nearly set up Taylor with a stinging cross in the second half, solid performance from the left back.

Darren Pratley – 7

Moved into defence after Oshilaja’s injury and he was crucial in keeping us in front. Made some crunching tackles and flung himself at the ball right at the death. A courageous display from the experienced midfielder.

Josh Cullen – 8

Yet another fantastic display from the Irishman. Like Wednesday night he was all over the pitch, getting stuck in and darted around the field. He’s a workhorse that doesn’t stop.

Conor Gallagher – 7

Like Cullen, he ran around the field and was determined to win the ball. Took his goal with ice-cool composure to slam it into the net past Raya. That’s 3 in 5 for the Chelsea prodigy.

Jonny Williams – 8

By far the best player on the pitch in the first half. Got stuck in with some great challenges and had eagle-eyed vision to slot in Gallagher for his goal. Four assists for Jonny now, he’s certainly a big asset to this team

Jonathan Leko – 4

Quite a quiet and non-existent game for the 20-year-old. Couldn’t get through Brentford’s backline and couldn’t show any of his class against them. Came off at half time after an uneventful game from the West Brom loanee.

Lyle Taylor – 6

Also struggled to get through Brentford’s tough defensive line, although he did battle hard at times to win the ball. Nearly scored when he just missed Ben Purrington’s cross, but I’ve seen better days from the striker.

Subs

George Lapslie – 6

Played at right back when he replaced Oshilaja, an unnatural position for the young midfielder. However, he was solid in the defence, made some decent challenges and adapted quite well as a full back. Could this be a new position for George?

Tomer Hemed – 5

Made his Charlton debut in the second half, but didn’t really have much of an impact. Defensively he did well, but he didn’t show much of his attacking ability. He needs more minutes before we can properly judge him.

Sam Field – N/A

Wasn’t on the pitch long enough to give him a fair rating.
