Addicks assistant manager Phil Parkinson is more than pleased with the way the club have responded to a recent run of defeats, as well as highlighting what he sees as a key area for the club to exploit.

Having endured three defeats in a row (Wolves Plymouth and QPR) Phil Parkinson is more than happy with the run of three straight victories after (Southampton, Bristol City and Cardiff) picking out the Saints win as a particularly impressive win: “It was always going to be a big test of the character of the squad after losing those three games previously but the Southampton game in particular was an excellent performance,” Phil Parkinson told the Addicks website.

But above all else he is pleased that the Addicks have started to exploit set-pieces (as good football will not always unlock defences in this division) and he sees them as being key areas that we have to look to for more goals this season, particularly in closely fought, tight encounters: “We are obviously getting quite well known in this division for playing a lot of good football but we also have to have it in our locker to get goals from set-plays, Phil Parkinson added.

“Sometimes you are not allowed to play as you like and other teams set up to stop you play so you have got to make sure you can get scrappy goals as well.

“I think it’s important throughout the course of this season that we score goals from set-plays.”

Good football will not always unlock defences, so as much as set-plays are always important at any level, at Championship level they will prove even more useful, but utilising them to the best of their ability is an art, but with people such as Andy Reid and Zheng Zhi to deliver we shouldn’t be lacking in quality coming in.

You can’t really argue with what Parkinson has said can you, we have reacted well to the run of defeats we have, and it is good to see set plays repeating benefits, long may this continue.

Maybe those defeats gave you the kick up the backside the team needed. You have certainly responded well with good away wins at Saints and Bristol city.

Yeah I think you are right, something had to give (thankfully it was a positive give!)
