Opening Goal Frustrates Fraeye

Interim head coach Karel Fraeye has bemoaned the timing of Burnley’s opening goal in the weekend’s hammering at Turf Moor.

With Scott Arfield opening the scoring for them seconds before the half time break, speaking to the Official Site Fraeye had to admit that the goal completely took the wind from the sails of the players, as up until that point he felt we were doing quite well and arguably on top, of course what then happened in the second half has been consigned to history.

‘For the first 44 minutes, we were the best team. After we conceded, we were the second best.’

Frustratingly for Fraeye he just knows it’s chicken and egg given the season we’ve had so far, the confidence of the players and in runs of form like this, more often than not a molehill becomes a mountain during games.

‘The typical thing for when a team is struggling. You concede at the worst moment after a good performance in the first half. Going 1-0 down was a big blow and we never recovered from it, which was a very bad thing.’

As simple as it is to highlight that flaw, he knows it’s just as simple to highlight how we turn it around.

‘Score. We have to score when we we play 45 minutes like that. Of course, not having Lookman, Gudmundsson and then Vaz Te coming off it did not help things.’

With the festive run of fixtures now on Charlton, the gaffer went on to say that each game is as important as all the others, so he’s not picking out any match as having more bearing for the club at the minute.

The team just have to dust themselves down and go again and try and find some belief.

‘This game was as important as any other. Everybody saw that we did not come for a draw; we did not come and park the bus. We came here to win the game and we deserved to be up in the first half, but instead we concede one minute before half time and we go back to the changing rooms 1-0 down. We have made things difficult for ourselves. We were 2-0 up against Bolton and gave it away, 2-0 up against Brighton and gave it away. Today, we were not rewarded for our first 44 minutes and then we were punished.’
