Mcleod Strike Not Enough

Charlton knew this was not going to be their day from the moment they arrived in the Midlands for this early Saturday kick-off. The Addick’s kit man had forgot to pack an alternative pair of shorts to Charlton’s home white ones. Meaning that the Charlton players had to wear West Brom’s away set so that they did not cause a colour clash which is forbidden by league rules.

This match started a tight affair. Both sides had half chances but The Baggies seemed to be the more dominant force, keeping large amounts of possesion and creating the better chances.

West Brom were unlucky to take the lead in the 31st minute when Chris Powell managed to clear a Cesar shot from off the line.

Amazingly Charlton were able to break down the other end a matter of minutes later and Chris Iwelumo was able to nod home a Jerome Thomas cross while carrying an injury. It was this injury that caused Iwelumo to retire on 44 minutes with Mcleod taking his place.

Charlton did not hold the lead for long, Bednar was able to continue his fine run of form swapping passes with Gera and firing low to make it 1-1.

Five minutes into the second half West Brom were able to take the lead with Gera again involved. Chris Brunt crossed for Gera to rise and head in.

This led to a spell of Charlton pressure, Zhi going close twice along with Luke Varney.

Izale Mcleod was able to open his Charlton account on 73 minutes. Varney did well to pull the ball back across the box for Mcleod to shoot home.

Again The Addicks could not hold on for long as West Brom went on to go in-front again on the 80 minute mark. In almost an exact copy of the Baggies’ second strike Brunt again crossed for Gera to head the ball passed Nicky Weaver.

West Brom sealed their win three minutes later, Kevin Phillips was able to fire the ball into the Charlton net after a lose ball bounced around the penalty area.

Good report Jimmy. I had forgotten that “short” swap incident, you’d have thought the kit man would have been on the ball wouldn’t you? I think it was a fair result overall wasn’t it, the Baggies were always the more threatening and deserved their win really didn’t they.
