Jackson Will Play Wherever

Johnnie Jackson was used defensively last season when Charlton had him on a brief loan from Notts County (before returning and being signed permanently in the summer) and this has been where he’s been mostly playing this season too.

Jackson is a midfielder by trade so that would be the best position for him, however as long as he’s playing the 28-year-old is happy to play wherever he’s asked to play, Jackson told skysports.com: “Personally, I am just looking to keep my place in the starting XI; that is my target first and foremost.

“It’s all about trying to help the side win as many games as possible.”

The problem with him being a natural midfielder means he’ll always be looking to get forward and attack more, yet this is something that he’s been able to resist more than he thought he would and believes he has adapted well, adding: “When I’ve been playing in midfield there’s always the temptation to progress forward as much as possible, creating danger for the opposition.

“But I’m happy to suppress those forward tendencies if there’s a job to be done at the back. It’s all about pride and keeping the shirt.

“I’ve probably taken to defending more than I thought and although I am a midfielder by trade, I feel I’ve done well at the back when used there.”

It’s been an up and down start to our season but this is something that the former Tottenham, Watford and Colchester midfielder believes was to be expected with a number of new players in the side, however with people starting to gel he thinks we’ll see the benefits of this and is aiming for maximum points from our next three, Jackson also added: “There are a few new players here so it’s case of waiting for the guys to gel together, which I believe they are doing now.

“In matches coming up against Tranmere Rovers, Dagenham & Redbridge and MK Dons we know we’ve got the chance of picking up nine points, and that’s definitely the aim.”

I’d sooner he played in midfield but as long as he’s playing that’s the main thing. He’s doing a job wherever he’s asked though.
