A sparsely populated Valley eventually witnessed the home win that the vast majority had come to see.

The visitors came off the back of a 5-0 home drubbing and many believed a Charlton victory would be a formality.

The game was a dull and lack lustre affair with the Addicks looking out of salts. The one moment of quality in a tedious first-half brought a goal. A clever back heel by Burton on the left, released Basey to deliver a perfect cross for Mooney to head home.

Both crowd and team seemed to think the job had been completed, even though there was an hour to go. If so, they had to revise their thoughts five minutes into the second-half. Llera was beaten by Anthony Sweeney’s turn and brought him down. Denis Behan’s penalty struck Elliot on the way in.

With the game slipping away, Parkinson introduced McKenzie, Wagstaff and Dickson. Wagstaff had been on the field for just three minutes when he struck the 79th minute winner. His speculative 25 yarder was greeted with groans by some…until they saw its destination!

Dickson would have calmed the nerves if his late header had not been chalked off. The ‘goal’ sparked a streaker into running onto the pitch in a lime green mankini!
