The League 1 season continued with the latest round of games played over the weekend.
A surprise defeat for leaders Sheffield United saw Scunthorpe close the gap on the leaders. Coventry dropped to bottom below Oldham, Chesterfield and Shrewsbury.

A six game winning run Sheffield United had been on came to a end when Walsall’s second half show saw the Saddlers eventually run out convincing winners. The Blades saw the lead – with Scunthorpe winning – cut to a point after this 4-1 defeat.
Wimbledon’s first win in four – when they won 2-1 against Oxford at Kingsmeadow – took the Dons up to 12th in the table and gave them an outside hope of getting back into a play-off place.
The chance to close the gap on Sheffield United was missed by Bolton when they slipped to a surprise 2-1 defeat against struggling Swindon at the Macron Stadium. The Trotters remain in 3rd but are now five points off an automatic promotion place.
A first win in 10 saw Bury recover from falling behind early on to run out 5-1 winners against Peterborough at Gigg Lane move out of the bottom 4.
There wasn’t anything to separate rivals Charlton and Millwall – after the Lions won the corresponding fixture at the Den before Christmas – as the sides played out a 0-0 draw, which did little to help the play-off hopes.
A first win in five – after Danny Wilson had been sacked following the most recent defeat – was picked up by Chesterfield to keep them in the relegation zone on goal difference alone. Coventry dropped to the foot of the table after this 1-0 defeat at the Proact Stadium.
Fleetwood are now unbeaten in nine – winning all but three – after a win against potential play-off rivals Bristol Rovers. The Cod Army retained 6th with the Pirates now four points off the final play-off place.
2nd placed Scunthorpe opened up a five point gap between them and Bolton – who are behind in 3rd – and also closed to within a point of the leaders Sheffield United after a 2-1 win at Northampton. The Cobblers – following the recent appointment of Justin Edinburgh – has suffered eight defeats in the last 10.
Edinburgh’s former club Gillingham slipped to a third defeat in a row when they lost 1-0 at Oldham. The Latics’ first win in 10 took them off the bottom of the league – above Coventry – with them now three points from safety.
Shrewsbury’s survival bid was also boosted after a 1-0 win at Greenhous Meadow. The Shrews’ 1-0 win – with goal difference alone keeping them in the bottom 4 – against promotion chasing Bradford was a first for the Bantams in seven.
Having lost leaders Sheffield United in the last game Southend responded positive with a 2-1 win against promotion rivals Rochdale. The Blues’ win wasn’t enough to take them into the top 6 though with Dale seeing a five game winning run come to an end.
