Friday night will see Port Vale – at risk of being dragged into a relegation battle – hosting Bury. The Shakers are already embroiled in this dogfight but if thy can make it back-to-back wins they’ll virtually ensure they can’t end the weekend in the bottom 4.
On Saturday league leaders Sheffield United will look to react to a defeat – this ended a six game winning run – last weekend when Gillingham visit Bramall Lane. Victory for the Blades and they’ll stay top regardless but anything else and they could drop a place.
Bradford’s surprise defeat against Shrewsbury saw them miss a chance to keep up with an automatic promotion place. However, the Bantams are still very much in the play-offs ahead of a visit from Millwall. The Lions are unbeaten in five but come into the weekend four points off the top 6.
Charlton – unbeaten in four – will have eyes on closing the seven points between them and the play-offs during the remainder of the season. The Addicks will have to overcome automatic promotion chasing Scunthorpe though at the Valley with the Iron looking to consolidate – at the very least – 2nd place.
If Chesterfield can follow up a win from last weekend with another against Wimbledon – beaten by Sutton United in the FA Cup in midweek – the Spireites could move out of the relegation zone. The Dons – two unbeaten in the league – will still have play-off aspirations though and want the points at the Proact Stadium.
As Coventry are without a win in 10 now – defeat to fellow strugglers Chesterfield saw them drop to the foot on League 1 – it isn’t looking good for the Sky Blues. Russell Slade will look to get his first win when promotion chasing Fleetwood – unbeaten in nine – head to the Ricoh Arena.
MK Dons will look to make it three unbeaten to further improve their survival hopes. Should Northampton – who have lost four in a row – suffer another defeat at the stadium:mk the Cobblers are at greater risk of being drawn into the relegation battle.
Having seen a five game winning run end Rochdale will look for a reaction when Oxford visit Spotland. Dale are still well placed for a play-off finish but this could come under threat if the U’s left with the points.
A huge relegation six pointer – as they call them – between Shrewsbury and Oldham will take place at Greenhous Meadow. A victory for either and they could move out of the bottom 4. However, a Shrews win – as they look to make it two in a row and three unbeaten – would make that scenario more likely with the Latics also looking to make it back-to-back wins.
Southend have lost just once in the last 10 – this was against leaders Sheffield United – with Phil Brown playing host to a former club Bolton this time round. The Shrimpers could move into a top 6 place with a win whereas the Trotters – beaten in their last game – are looking to close the five point gap between them and 2nd place Scunthorpe.
After winning for only the second time in the last 10 Swindon will look to make it successive wins against Peterborough to ease relegation concerns. Posh – hammered 5-1 by Bury last weekend – will want a reaction to keep in touch with the play-off places.
Walsall collected a surprise win against Sheffield United last weekend – for only a third win in the last 10 – with the Saddlers keen to make it back-to-back home wins when promotion chasing Bristol Rovers visit the Banks’s Stadium. The Pirates – who have lost two of the last three – are four points off the play-offs.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
