Table topping Sheffield United bid to extend a six game winning run with another at Walsall to at least maintain a four point lead the Blades now have at the top. The Saddlers – who haven’t won in the last two – will be looking to spoil this run though.
Wimbledon’s play-off push has stalled in recent weeks with the Dons now a place below their 12th placed visitors Oxford.
As Bolton were in FA Cup action last weekend the Trotters dropped down to 3rd place. They host struggling Swindon aiming for a win to potentially return to the automatic promotion places. The Robins haven’t won in four and are just four points above the drop zone.
Winless in 10 Bury – who have dropped back into a relegation place – welcome play-off chasing Peterborough to Gigg Lane. Posh are unbeaten in five but as they’ve drawn the last three have dropped out of the top 6.
Bitter rivals Charlton – who lost the reverse fixture ahead of Christmas – and Millwall meet at the Valley. The Lions are a place above the Addicks – but only two points off the play-offs – in 10th and hold a three point advantage ahead of this game.
Having lost for a third time in four games Chesterfield sacked Danny Wilson last weekend. A huge relegation meeting with Coventry sees the Spireites play host to the second bottom Sky Blues. A win for either could take them out of the bottom 4.
Fleetwood’s eight game unbeaten run has seen the Cod Army into a play-off place. However, visiting Bristol Rovers are right on their coattails with them just a point off the top 6 in 8th place.
Rob Page initially looked as if he had avoided the sack at Northampton after an eighth defeat in 10 – and some badly chosen words after the last loss – but he didn’t. The Cobblers will host 2nd place Scunthorpe with the Iron seeking a win to assure they retain an automatic promotion place and potentially close the gap on the leaders.
Bottom of the league Oldham are without a win in their last 10. The Latics could potentially climb out of the bottom 4 with a win against Gillingham at Boundary Park though. Defeat for the Gills and they’ll be dragged closer to a potential relegation battle.
Port Vale and MK Dons have a bit of space between them and the relegation places but not much – they meet at Vale Park with both sides knowing a win could be crucial.
A win could also be crucial for Shrewsbury or Bradford with both sides in need of the points for differing reasons. A Shrews win would ensure they stay out of the relegation zone whereas a Bantams win would keep them 4th and could close the gap on the automatic promotion places.
Southend have only lost once in their last 10 – the last game against Sheffield United – so the Shrimpers will look for a reaction against potential play-off rivals Rochdale. Dale are 5th having won five in a row ahead of the trip to Roots Hall.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
