It was a case of third time licky for Chris Powell when he signed combative midfielder, Darel Russell on Thursday. Unsuccessful attempts to land James Harper from Hull and Gary Gardner from Aston Villa led Powell to switch his attention to 31-year-old Russell. He is likely to go straight into the squad for the Huddersfield game.

Paul Benson’s move to Bradford was called off after the Bantams tried to renegotiate the fee for making the deal permanant in January. Benson’s knee lacks catildge due to an operation he had in his Dagenham days. The condition did not hamper his switch to The Valley however.

Swindon, alerted by the collapse of the deal, made a late move and thought they had secured Benson on loan until January but the deal is still to be ratified by the Football League. It would appear that some of the paperwork did not arrive until after the deadline. Benson will resume training at Sparrows Lane until the matter has been resolved.
