Charlton are in with a real shout of avoiding the drop after stringing together a good run of results and we are now just four points behind Sheffield United who are one place above us.

The next two games against Wigan and Manchester City, who are both still looking over their shoulders, are crucial. Add to that the visit of Sheffield Utd who visit The Valley on April 21, and there are some points within reach of Pardew’s men.

‘We’re definitely in the hunt,’ Holland revealed. ‘We’ve managed to keep on the coat-tails of a few other teams as well so it’s not just [17th-placed] Sheffield United that we’re chasing.

‘We play Wigan in two weeks’ time, which is another key game for us, and we have to keep performing like we have done in the last few games.

We’re very positive, there are plenty of key games coming up.

‘We did the business against Newcastle after Saturday’s results went against us and with eight more games to go hopefully we can do the business in those matches as well.

‘We’re pleased with how things are going. There is a good spirit among the players, we’ve got a good squad now and there are still some big players to come back.’

The football that Pardew has got the team playing of late is definitely not of a relegation side. However we are paying for the stupidity of both Dowie and Reed.

One thing that`s for sure though is the fact we are not throwing the towel in by any means, and of the three teams in the bottom tier we look most capable of making the great escape.
