Luzon – Red Card Changed Millwall Game

Head coach Guy Luzon has heavily questioned the decision of the referee to send off Chris Solly in the weekend’s loss to Millwall.

With Charlton being reduced to ten men in the first half, we did go on to get ourselves in front but Millwall battled back with two late goals to take all three points and speaking to the Official Site Luzon didn’t believe it was a deliberate handball, saying that it hit him in the face and the referee got it completely wrong.

For Luzon the fact Solly had blood coming from his face should’ve told the referee all he needed to know, but in that moment it changed the game and left us with an uphill battle that we almost managed to pull off.

‘Yes, of course. It`s not easy to play with 10 players. We are not sure that it was a red card. It touches his head, not his hand. But that was the decision. We came with great attitude in the second half. We organised well in defence and we had some good counter-attacks, scoring from one of them.’

Luzon says that having taken the lead in the game, it was about trying to remain organised and limiting their chances, so we had the energy to see the game out and he felt we did that quite well but luck was against us.

‘One deflection 10 minutes from the end and then we had a great chance with Simon Church to finish the game and, unfortunately, from the next attack they scored the winning goal. We are disappointed because I think my players gave everything and we only had 10 players. We began to believe and we gave our maximum but this is football.’

Luzon went on to say it was certainly a good and quick start from our opponents on the day and for the first half largely they were in control, but going down to ten men for him that just showed how well we had done in the second period.

‘Of course. The red card changed out style of game because we liked to move the ball. We like to create chances to score and be an offensive team. It`s really difficult to play with 10 and move the ball. We did the maximum in the second half but in the end it was not enough.’

Luzon was also asked if he felt Millwall wanted the win more than we did, and he didn’t believe that was the case and he felt the fans could see from the effort of the players in the second period how much they wanted the result.

‘I think they started very well in the first 20 minutes, but after that we got into the game. In the second half I don`t think they wanted it more than us because they wanted everything. My target is always to come to the game and get the win. My mind is never on the draw and not about losing. It doesn`t matter if it`s home or away. We stayed with two strikers and we did everything to win.’
