Few realise (outside of Charlton and West Ham) that Jermain Defoe actually started his career with The Addicks.

Defoe Joined Charlton as a 14-year-old and was part of our youth academy until The Hammers came in and stole him away as a 16-year-old in 1999, handing him a first-team debut in 2000.

The rest of his career (which has seen spells with Tottenham and Portsmouth, he is now back with Spurs) is, as the saying goes history but it is the present that’s important to England fans and we were all delighted to see the striker poach the goal to make sure that England’s involvement at the World Cup continues.

A second round meeting with Germany, Ghana or Serbia will be confirmed in a couple of hour’s time.
