All Change At Left Back

Heading into the weekend – when Charlton didn’t have a game owing to our early FA Cup exit – the arrival of West Ham left back Lewis Page was confirmed.

The 20 year old had made three Europa League appearances for West Ham but that was his lot with the Hammers.

After loan spells with Coventry and Cambridge Page has come to SE7 on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee signing a two and a half year contract.

Karl Robinson told the Official Website

‘He’s quick, likes to get forward and is a good crosser. I really like that in a full-back. I got a chance to see him during his loan spell at Coventry and he`s a left-back that fits in well with our system. We`re building a squad here to get into that top six and Lewis will be an important part of what we are trying to do.’

Shortly after his arrival it was announced Morgan Fox had completed his own exit from Charlton to join Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. This was also for an undisclosed amount.

Fox left Charlton having been with the club since the age of 14. Funnily enough his Addicks debut was made against Sheffield Wednesday back in 2014 and he went on to made 116 first team appearances.

As Fox was cup-tied so couldn’t make his Sheffield Wednesday debut against Middlesbrough on Sunday but could do this in the Championship this weekend.

Explaining the deal Robinson said it had been agreed with the 24 year old when a player was signed – Page – his exit would be granted. The boss was again quoted by the Official Website.

‘Every time Morgan Fox stepped on the pitch for Charlton, he gave his all for this club. He`s a hard-working, committed left back and we wish him all the best at Sheffield Wednesday. We agreed to let him go once we had a direct replacement for him lined up and I’m very pleased we have been able to sign Lewis on a permanent basis. We have very good depth at left back and we’re continuing to focus on building a squad capable of achieving our goal – a place in the top six.’

CEO Katrien Meire said a ‘large offer’ had been made last summer but this bid was knocked back. However, with Wednesday returning with an approach and Fox making it clear he wanted to talk to them Charlton agreed.

‘We had a large offer for Morgan on transfer deadline day in the summer which we rejected. However, Sheffield Wednesday came back in for Morgan and he was keen to speak to them. We are grateful for Morgan`s great service over the years whether it be for our academy sides or for the Charlton first team.’

Fox added.

‘I`ve been at Charlton for a long time and it was quite strange collecting my things and leaving Sparrows Lane. I would like to thank everyone at the club for their support throughout my time here. Charlton Athletic will always hold a special place in my heart.’
