A Bridge Too Far

Charlton will face a second season in League One after losing to Swindon on penalties last night.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men as Gordon Greer was dismissed for a kung-fu style lunge at Deon Burton, and Manuel Llera for cynically wrestling Charlie Austin to the ground.

Swindon were forced to replace David Lucas in the first minute when the keeper landed awkwardly. First-half strikes by Ferry(own goal) and David Mooney in injury time, put the Addicks in the driving seat.

A sloppy pass on the halfway line by Bailey and some shambolic defending allowed Swindon to draw level on aggregate.

Bailey was inconsolable after being the only player to miss in the shoot-out, which Charlton lost 5-4.

Much work will need to be done both on and off the pitch by the time the 2010/11 gets underway in August.
