Promotion Always the Priority

The Addicks crashed out of the Carling Cup on Tuesday after a 3-1 defeat to Luton, and obviously this disappointed me as you never want to lose do you, but you have to prioritise.

This is something that Alan Pardew had been stressing before the match with the Hatters, and was something he again pointed out after the 3-1 extra time defeat: ‘There are some financial rewards to be had but no-one is going to remember if you get knocked out of the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup but finish eighth in the league.

‘It was always going to be difficult making so many changes but they’ll learn from that.

‘I had to take the opportunity to rest the likes of Chris Powell.’

As he usually does Alan Pardew makes perfect sense, as yes it was sad to see the Addicks go out but unless we had basically won the Carling Cup few would remember where or when we went out if promotion wasn’t achieved, even a Carling Cup final win would not compensate us should the Addicks not go up.

We all wanted the Addicks to win, and a cup run would have been nice, but ten changes from the previous match, although there was still enough quality to have won, just proves the point Alan Pardew had made before the match, and did again after.
