Zheng Zhi Chants – Racist?

As all us Charlton fans are aware our new midfielder/striker has made a very good start to life at The Valley. His performances have been superb for a player who has only been in London since January.

I have noticed on some Charlton websites complaints from fans that are not happy about the song being sung about ZZ. I have also received a few emails from my readers claiming I should try and put up an article to get the song banned from being sung during games.

First of all I am sure that the covered end who have originated the ZZ song are only trying to have a bit of a laugh while making a very catchy chant for the rest of the ground to sing aloud.

I am aware that racism in football is not to ever be tolerated and as a club we are possibly the best for our anti-racism promotions and dedicated days, such as Red Black & White day.

The song itself is sung to the tune of Chelsea`s ‘care free’.

The song includes Zheng Zhi’s name and the line that some are finding offensive, which accuses him of selling dodgy DVD`s. The song ends with the usual dig at rivals Millwall.

Now I can understand that some fans are unhappy with this song and that they wish to take action. As a fellow supporter I see this song as a harmless show of support for Zheng Zhi and no one has intended to be offensive.

Supporters who are not happy should contact the club and I am sure should they feel it breaches the rules of The Valley then they will take action.

In the mean time however lets make sure that we carry on building the atmosphere before the games and not let this issue damage the support that`s helping the club battle to avoid relegation. We are making a big difference up in the stands and we must ensure this does not change.
