Addicks youngster Danny Uchechi has played his part in winning the Intercontinental Cup with Nigeria at under-23 level.

Danny Uchechi may have started the tournament on the bench, but by the time the Final came round against Australia (who were the tournament favourites) he was into the starting line-up, and his Man of the Match showing helped Nigeria to a 2-0 win.

Impressive performances by Danny Uchechi saw him earn praise from his coach Samson Siasia, who said: “The boy from Charlton, Danny Uchechi, has surprised me in this tournament.

“He has been a good inclusion in the team. I think Nigeria is so richly blessed with quality players.”

Danny Uchechi himself feels that it has been an experience that will benefit him (and hopefully us) in the future, he added: “I played the whole game and was man of the match against Chile, and then we won the final as well.

“I got the nod to start again after the way I played in the semi-final and again played the whole game. We won 2-0, and I was voted man of the match again.

“It’s been a very good experience for me, and I have certainly grown in confidence a lot more. I have got my first medal and debut shirt and hopefully it’s the first of many more.”

With the Olympic Games coming up he might have played himself into contention for a place in the Nigerian party going to Beijing, Danny Uchechi also said: “As for the Olympics, I have been told I am in contention so I will see what happens.

“I’ve just got to let this sink in first.”

All the signs are pointing towards Danny Uchechi being the latest in a line of Addicks youngsters to come through the ranks at The Valley, so hopefully he will.
