I`m not sorry to lose this one. To say the better team won would not be fair to the battling Addicks. Going ahead within 5 minutes of the game was really a dangerous start because it can work against you, which in the end it did just that.

Cup games have not the same importance that they had many years ago. Extra games that will lengthened the games that need to be played is something most managers rather not be involved in. Let`s face it. Charlton`s progress in this tournament is not what is called progressive. We had one crack at it seventy years ago and ever since have come away empty handed, not even getting close to the final, except the following year.

Will we ever be contenders again? Not while we don`t take these contests seriously. Playing an understrength team is not the way forward if we want to excel in the cup. I can understand why Karl Robinson opted for playing youngsters, he is obviously protecting his better players to contest the league which is priority. On his mind is the Championship.

That too is fine and many of us would agree with him. I personally think so. When you enter a contest with only half a team and you get beaten by big margin, it is the players who have to overcome the embarrassment. And when we look at who we fielded, those youngsters might not overcome such a mauling that easily.

We went into this game out of a 4-1 win that was turned on its head by a team who fielded a strong side that meant business. Home advantage made their job a little easier. In fairness we gave them a fright by scoring 5 minutes into the game. But there was always going to be only one winner, and I`m sorry to say it was never going to be the Addicks.

Strength in numbers was the key to this game and for the most of it we had our backs to the wall. Our attacking intent was always scuppered by the more powerful midfield that snuffed out any advances we made to get forward. We did our best, it could be said. But I`m glad we have been knocked out of this meaningless cup.
