Last season the Addicks played the football many thought was not in keeping with past performances that had the supporters singing the praises of the team at every home game. Whether it was the fault of the manager or the owner is an argument that has no end. The blame game gathered pace regardless of whom was the front runner to take the fall and we don`t want a repeat of all the uncertainty come the new campaign.

Lessons had to be learned so that when the new season starts we will be ready to take division one by the scruff of the neck and enter the new campaign with only one thought and that is to get promoted. So far we have signed three players. Last term we were lucky I that we had teams in the bottom half just as bad as we were. But we all know that no team should rely on others for a helping hand to get out of trouble.

Many fans will probably agree with me that we often stutter in the transfer market. If we are going to be in the mix at the end of next season the club should have really get it right by securing the services of players who fit the bill. One such incident I am referring to is Nathan Thompson who is out of contract at the city ground Swindon and who would have been a good prospect to bolster our team. If only??.

Apparently Karl Robinson is a big fan of Thomson and has been left disappointed to miss out on him. Thomson opted out to join Pompey because it appears they have promised him first team football. Why could Charlton not make this promise? Losing this possibility when we are obviously in dire straits and need new players must be unsettling for a team coach who knows the players he has were not good enough to compete at the level they were in. Am I being a little critical up to now perhaps? A good friend has told me I need to be patient for there is a signing imminent. I welcome this. When this happens and I will be relieved.

I understand that the club has now secured the services of Mark Marshall. Just for the record, here are a few details about the player. He`s 30-year-old and was born in Manchester – that is Manchester in Jamaica. He started out in Non-League football Carshalton Athletic before moving to Grays Athletic and Eastleigh. After a spell at Swindon Town he joined Barnet in July 2010 where he received a two-year ban from football after he was found to have a stimulant in his system following a routine drugs test on Boxing Day 2011. He said at the time he had unwittingly taken the banned substance. He resurrected his career at Coventry City in 2014, switched to Port Vale, and was Bradford`s City player of the year at the end of last season 2016/17. He has a lightning pace and according to an old team-mate has a tremendous self-belief in his ability to take players on and beat them.

Also, we have Billy Clarke who came to us a few weeks ago. A good start securing him although many supporters are not impressed with this signing.

While I`m writing this, it has come to my attention that we have signed our third player. This player has come to us from Reading. The highly rated attacker Tariqe Fosu- Henry is 21 years old and can play behind the strikers and also operate off either flanks. He has been offered a two year deal with the Addicks in spite having been offered a new contract by the Royals. Karl Robinson said that we are building a squad of hungry players that want to play for the club. He wants to be here and that is important.

All we need now is Ricky Holmes to complete the new look Charlton. I understand he has not put pen to paper which is a little concerning. But fingers crossed this will soon be righted and all Addicks supporters can look forward to a season of great football.
