The Next Steven Gerrard?

Jonjo Shelvey has often been touted around as being the next big thing, the next Steven Gerrard is how some have described the Charlton star who will soon join Liverpool.

Gerrard is Shelvey’s idol and to play alongside him at Liverpool and one day eventually become his replacement, as the 18-year-old hopes to become is something that Phil Parkinson believes the midfielder can do, Parkinson said: “It has been well documented that his idol is Gerrard.

“Jonjo called me on Wednesday to tell me he’d had lunch with him and Jamie Carragher at Liverpool’s training ground.

“It is a dream move for him – a storybook transfer. But his aim is to become Gerrard’s long-term replacement. Can he do it? Well, he has the potential.”

The Addicks boss knows that Liverpool are taking a bit of a gamble on Shelvey as he’s not proven at a higher level, yet with the ability that he has the initial outlay for £1.7m (with more to potentially follow) is one that was worth taking, Parkinson added: “It is a gamble for them because he’s young but it’s worth taking for the money.”

I’m sure that Shelvey will go onto develop into that footballer that many believe he can so this will be very good value for money for Liverpool in the long-term, it’s still a shame that his Addicks career was brought to an end before the end of our campaign and he couldn’t play his part in helping us back into The Championship.

I just hope that he follows his actions on the field rather than those off of it!

Jonjo is going to be a very good footballer. I hope that Liverpool treat him right and he doesn’t go the same was as so many other promising youngsters have with Liverpool!

That’s a good point, that fat Spanish bloke (if he stays) does have a habit of ruining young talent or at least not giving them a chance.
