The Addicks Should have Won

Alan Pardew thought that the Addicks should have held on for all three points, as we had to settle for a 1-1 draw after Ian Dowie’s Sky Blues equalised late on.

The Sky Blues did miss some chances, and hit the post but the Addicks could have won really, and Alan Pardew feels we shot ourselves in the foot: ‘In the second half we made too many errors and were guilty of overplaying a bit in our own box. Without them really creating anything major, we’ve shot ourselves in the foot and lost two points on the back of it,’ Alan Pardew told the Addicks website.

A major talking point was the penalty incident involving Luke Varney, which wasn’t given, much to Alan Pardew’s as he also explained: ‘It was a definite penalty and it was a big decision for the referee, and I felt he backed out. It was easy for him to walk away from it.

‘He said it was two bodies coming together and he didn’t think it was a penalty.’

However, on reflection as much as he might have felt we could have got more, he was overall pleased with the point and would have settled for this before, adding: ‘I was pleased at half-time and I though we would go on and win. But too many mistakes were made in the second half.

‘We were a bit casual and guilty of overplaying in our own box, and you cannot do that at this level.

‘We had subdued them and done our job, and may have nicked a second on the break but then gifted them two or three opportunities, one of which they took.

‘Before the game I would actually have taken a draw on the back of their fantastic result at Old Trafford. But obviously it feels like two points dropped in terms of how the game unfolded.’

The mistakes the Addicks made did mount up, and you can only afford so many of these before you are made to pay, as we eventually were.
