Dale Stephens would like to leave London and return North to be nearer his family.

Stephens almost left Charlton a year ago but a move never went through, this left the midfielder disappointed but he knuckled down and got on with it.

Chris Powell, if the right offer comes in, has admitted that he’ll allow him to get this move North.

He said: ‘It’s a hard one with Dale because he had the disappointment of not moving in the transfer window this time last year.

‘He got on with it and I’m mindful of the fact that he has suffered a little bit with homesickness. We have had discussions with him that if anything transpires that might be right for him to go back up north then we’ll look at it.’

While he is a Charlton player though he’ll remain in his thoughts for selection and should start at the weekend.

Should no move come about it would remain in Stephens’ hands to keep himself fit and do enough in training, and games when selected, to ensure that he remains in his plans.

Powell added: ‘But if he’s here, as I’ve always said, if they’re fit then they are under consideration regardless of their situation.

‘We’ve had that discussion with him but, of course, it takes a club to pick up the phone and if nobody does, he’s here. We’ve had no real interest from northern clubs and we just have to play it by ear and see if anyone comes in. If they don’t he’ll have to stay fit and, like any footballer, he will play here.’

At least Stephens, like many a modern day footballer, hasn’t thrown his toys out of the pram and acted like a petulant (mercenary) child to get his way!
