Charlton managed to secure a win in what was a terrfic advert for football at The Valley on Saturday afternoon.

Reading who were relegated from the Premier League last season looked a shadow of the side that managed to secure 8th place in the top flight two seasons ago.

A fine performance from Alan Pardew’s side ensured that it was Charlton that bagged the 3 points up for grabs.

The Addicks took a 2-0 lead. First going ahead through Matt Holland on 26 minutes. A shot from Luke Varney was poorly saved by the Reading ‘keeper and Holland was there to tap home.

Andy Gray then added to the Londoner’s lead by slotting home a penalty on 42 after Varney was brought down in the Reading penalty area.

To add to the drama Reading were awarded a penalty of their own only minutes earlier due to a foul commited by Charlton’s French right-back, Moutaouakil. Kevin Doyle stepped up for the vistors and smacked the ball against the bar.

Reading were able to pull one back before the break though through defender Sonko.

Steve Coppell’s side were awarded another penalty in the second half Fortune was adjudged to have fouled former Charlton striker Leroy Lita.

This time around Stephen Hunt stepped up for the kick and again a Reading player failed to score as Nicky Weaver guessed right. The referee then ordered a re-take of the spot kick after seeing an encroachment before the penalty was taken. Hunt stepped up again and this time made no mistakes.

Charlton were back in the lead on 68 minutes through Luke Varney. Lloyd Sam managed to centre a ball which Varney was able to head home.

The Addicks then doubled their lead only a matter of minutes later. On loan winger Bouazza scoring a stunning volley from the edge of the area after good work from Moutaouakil.

At the death Reading defender Sonko was sent off for a second bookable offence.
