Parky Knows He Needs A Lot More

Charlton will be in pre-season action again tonight but following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon Phil Parkinson knows his squad is a long way from being competitive for the League 1 season.

Given all the goings, and not many comings of the summer so far Parkinson knows that more quality is needed in this squad with him wanting another eight players if possible, Parkinson told The South London Press: “If you write down the players who have gone, of the ones who finished the last game of last season only two of that team are left.

“We need to get some quality into the squad but we all know that and there`s a lot of work to be done. We`re nowhere near the finished article and I think we need another eight players.”

A squad of around 20 players is what Parkinson is looking for, however he’s not setting a time for when this is needed as he also knows it’s about bringing in the right people to make us closer to where we need to be, adding: “We need a squad of 20 and I`ll be working hard to bring in another eight. There`s no real timescale because it`s important we get the right ones. All managers would like the whole squad in on the first day of pre-season but the squad building is a work in progress throughout that period.

“We`re a million miles away from where we`ve got to be to be competitive in this division but the board are Charlton supporters and they want to see a side out there that`s competitive. We`ll be endeavouring to achieve that.”

The position that we’re in financially makes it even more difficult for Parkinson but if he can do more deals to bring in players on the cheap, but with the quality that he has the others so far we’ll not go far wrong.
