When you are 3-0 up (even if you are fielding a side with several young players in it) you would expect to win, even more so when you are playing a side that play in the League below you. However, Charlton failed to do this on Tuesday night.

At 3-0 up away against Shrewsbury after three goals in less than 35 minutes through Pawel Abbott (twice) and then Lee Martin The Addicks were in control, however The Shrews came back and eventually won 4-3 to secure their place in the second round of the Carling Cup.

Phil Parkinson took the blame for this but still thinks, despite the youngsters in the side that lessons could (and should) be gained from this, Parkinson said: “It’s obviously a disappointment. It was my decision to play a young team and with that young team you get naivety and that’s what cost us.

“It was a massive learning curve for the young players who got a chance tonight.

“I take responsibility because I was the one who picked the young team and the benefits of that are for the club going forward in terms of the young players who got 90 minutes’ experience under their belt.

“But whatever team we had out, when you’re 3-0 up you’ve got to see the game through and we did some incredibly naive things.”
