Parkinson Post Brighton

Charlton’s season has been stuttering along recently. Saturday’s win over Yeovil stopped a run of winless games but we hit another bump in the road on Tuesday as we lost at The Valley against Brighton.

Phil Parkinson said that an open game ended disappointingly for us and felt that missed chances, compared to the few that The Seagulls had in their 2-1 win is what cost us. That along with the lack of desire to make the most of these chances created.

Parkinson said: “We conceded the first goal but we didn’t get frantic after that and we kept trying to play on a difficult surface. I just felt that when we had chances, we didn’t make the goalkeeper work.

“In the second half we had three or four really good opportunities and their keeper didn’t really have a save to make. They’ve had one shot in the second half and it’s ended up in the back of the net.”

“Our desire to get on the end of things wasn’t as good as we would have liked but we certainly had the chances. There were one or two decisions which could have gone our way but the referee didn’t give them and that’s it.”

The Addicks boss also said that the playing surface at SE7 made it difficult (for both sides) but overall the consistency in our play is missing and perhaps the weekend win left too many with thoughts that a job had been done, however Parky also said that he felt some were jaded and this had something to do with Deon Burton’s injury. The striker has had a long standing groin problem and he heavy pitch did him no favours.

Defeat was felt even more so as Norwich and Leeds both won to extend their lead on us with the chasing pack also closing in, Parkinson added: “We’re looking both ways.

“Tonight is a blow; we can’t hide away from that. It’s that consistency we’ve got to get back to in this run in now and produce some performances.”

Parkinson did give Brighton (who were in the League 1 relegation zone before this game) credit as he feels their position is a false one but is now turning his attentions to Friday nights game at Southend, Parkinson also added: “We were on a high after Saturday as we felt it was back to the performance levels that we can produce.

“We’ve taken a step back so I’ve now got to the get the boys ready for Friday. It increases the expectancy on us to go and get a result. It will be a local-derby type of game and we’ve got to make sure we’re ready for it.”
