Alan Pardew has made his third signing of the summer buying Patrick ‘Paddy’ McCarthy from Championship rivals Leicester City for £650,000. The 24-year-old defender has signed a four-year deal at The Valley.

Charlton plc chairman Richard Murray said of the signing: ‘He has all the right attributes and the fact he was captain of Leicester City shows he is a leader and proven at Championship level.’

McCarthy was at Manchester City but he never made a senior appearance for the club and moved on loan to Boston United and Notts County before heading for Leicester in a £100,000 move.

An Irish international McCarthy has played at U19, U20 and U21 levels and also recently played for the ‘B’ side.

McCarthy joins Chris Iwelumo and Luke Varney as the new faces to appear at The Valley during the summer with the manager promising that there is more to follow.

I think this is a decent enough signing the Leicester fans have dubbed him as a fans favourite, but they have warned us of his injury record and his discipline.
