Such was Mark Gower’s desire to return to his southern roots that he turned down, what many would consider a dream move, to Australia.

Charlton brought in the midfielder following a successful loan spell last season after he parted company with Swansea, and fortunately for the club a potential move to Australia come about at the wrong time for him.

Gower told The South London Press: ‘There was the option of going to Australia for a couple of years – which is not exactly local!

‘There were a few bits and bobs but I told my agent I didn’t want to focus on anything other than Charlton to start with. It felt like a good fit for me and I wanted a deal to get done. I was only going to look elsewhere if things didn’t work out.

‘The Australian option came at the wrong time for me. I didn’t want to drag my children out of school. Maybe at another stage it would have been a nice change. This wasn’t the time or place to take up something like that.’

Money almost scuppered a permanent switch to the Valley but fortunately a deal could be agreed that was right for everyone, he added: ‘I wanted to stay, the club wanted me to go there – I wasn’t going to let money get in the way of that. Charlton offered close to what I wanted. I’m back with the family and this was a good fit all round.’

Fair play to the 34-year-old, what a life you would lead in Australia, however something are more important, such as family!
