Charlton Athletic striker Josh Magennis has spoken of his delight at being back amongst the goals as he made it three from four games against MK Dons at the weekend.

Having endured a 14 game barren spell from mid November through to early February, the Northern Ireland international has now scored three times in our last four matches, helping the side to four points in games against MK Dons and Bradford City. He also found the net in the defeat to Oxford United.

Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media this week, clearly he was hoping his current goalscoring form would run until the end of the season to give us a better chance of clinching promotion this year.

‘Obviously a striker is there to score goals but I know my place in this team and what the gaffer expects of me. Of course, he expects me to score goals but he expects me to do a multitude of other stuff. When you don`t score for the amount of time that I didn`t you`re going to have people asking questions. You just have to take it on the chin.’

Magennis went on to say that he’s experienced enough to know a striker goes through spells, both good and bad, and it’s about enjoying the good times but focusing on your teamwork contribution during the bad ones.

‘Football can be up and down. It`s a rollercoaster. You`re never in the middle. You`re either sky high or you`re lower than a snake’s belly under a top hat. You`ve just got to go with it. If there is doubters, you`ve just got to keep your head down, work hard and try and prove them wrong.’

He added.

‘The form I`m in at the minute, I feel great. The midfielders and wide men are finding me. It`s making me play even better. It`s always nice to score. Since I`ve been here the support has been nothing but brilliant especially towards myself and the lads. Hopefully it`ll continue and not only myself but more importantly the team will go on a run and we can put some distance on whose below us.’

With late goals conceded in the last three games prior to the weekend’s clash, Magennis praised the whole side for their defensive efforts as MK Dons threw everything at us and he insisted confidence remained high that we would soon return to winning ways.

‘We started the season on absolute flames and sets standards for the team and expectations. We then hit the worst form I`ve been involved in, not only the team but me personally with not scoring goals. We managed to turn it around and were taking the lead in games but just weren`t seeing it out. We were like ‘it just has to turn` and that`s what we`ve done.’

He went on to say.

‘If you don`t know what to do then just work hard and that`s what we`ve been doing behind the scenes. It was great to get these points because it takes us back into the top six. Psychologically, other teams can see us in there and it`s up to us to stay in there. We`ve got something to fight for to try and finish as high as we can.’
