Lee Bowyer provides his thoughts on why we lost so heavily against Huddersfield

Saturday was a day to forget as Charlton lost 4-0 at Huddersfield Town in a performance that was slated by all Addicks fans as Lee Bowyer took full responsibility for his side’s disastrous display.

Who scored a hattrick against Liverpool in 2003?

The simple fact of the matter is that our squad is quite weak for this division especially in terms of the numbers we have, the depth in our squad is almost non-existent and this is something Bowyer recognizes after a very underwhelming January transfer window ended on a low note.

Speaking with Richard Cawley from The South London Press the Charlton manager said this

For us to compete and win games we have to have most of our squad fit and we have to be at it, we have to be at our best.”

“If we ain’t and we’re slightly off it then we get found out because unfortunately a lot of their players are established Championship players – if not Premier League ones.”

Touching on transfers Lee Bowyer explained how teams around us had strengthened

“This division is a mini-Premier League now.

“Huddersfield are bringing on [Juninho] Bacuna and [Steve] Mounie – they were both in the Premier League last season. And they strengthened in January. They brought in four or five players – they recognized the situation they were in.

“All the teams around us strengthened their squads.”

I think the signings we ended up getting were mostly panic buys, although they all have the potential to do good in this league, whether they will or not is another story.

I just felt that we could have done a lot more in January and we really should have especially with new owners coming in the expectations were high and I felt that most of the fans feel let down with what we brought in, I don’t think we strengthened at all if anything the squad has been weakened with the losses of Jonathan Leko and Conor Gallagher, however, I feel that Leko’s position has in fact been strengthed with the addition on Andre Green who is so far the best January signing we have.

The next ten games are going to all be like cup finals and we can’t settle for anything less than three points this Saturday when Middlesbrough visit The Valley.
