It’s Not Going to be Easy is it?

With six games to go, including tomorrow’s visit to Southampton there’s still plenty of points up for grabs but how many will Charlton need to secure automatic promotion?

The Saints kick off the away games we’ll play between now and the final day of the season at Oldham Athletic with a trip to Exeter City also being played. Victories over Oldham and Exeter are must wins I’d think so 7 points wouldn’t be a bad return on the road would it? Tomorrow’s game is a huge one though and three points could prove priceless, but we’d accept this one draw I feel we need to aim for away from home being in this one wouldn’t we if truth were known?

Play-off chasing Colchester United, League 1 leaders Norwich City and fellow automatic promotion chasers (and long-term League 1 leaders) Leeds United all come to The Valley so we’ve got plenty of tough games to come at SE7 yet! The aim must be for maximum points on our own patch, however seven points with the draw coming against Norwich wouldn’t be a bad return would it?

We’ve stuttered along since Christmas, having some rougher patches than others but having won both the Easter games this should see confidence higher but it’s essential that we don’t get beaten at Southampton tomorrow. We can’t afford to lose any games really can we and also can’t afford to draw too many either. I’d say that Colchester, Exeter, Leeds and Oldham are must win games, Southampton and Norwich are must not lose.

I do think that we’ve got to go unbeaten in these games and 14 points wouldn’t be a bad return from these and even though we’ve wobbled at times this is achievable and could well be enough to secure that second automatic promotion spot?

I think the target of going unbeaten between now and the end of the season is a reasonable one and one that is also achieveable. 14 points isn’t a bad target to aim for, but have I been too optimistic?
