Igor is back on the rise!

|

When Igor Vetokele first arrived in SE7 there was quite a bit of hype surrounding him, after having Champions League experience with Danish side Copenhagen. Since then the hype has really dropped down subsequently having two loans to Zulte Waregem and Sint-Truiden where all in all he managed just 14 goals in 61 appearances, from the Igor we know, we knew he could do a lot better than that.

It seems like Igor was phased out of the team and we would not be seeing him in a Charlton shirt again in his career, we were wrong.

This season seems to be Igor’s come back season and with the way, he’s been playing for us at the backend of this campaign we can’t really complain. Igor scored his 5th goal of the season on Monday against a weak Scunthorpe side as we swept them aside 4-0 in a showing of what Charlton can do and a warning to anyone we may play us in the upcoming League One playoffs.

Igor was not playing for us in the away defeat to Oxford United due to a tight hamstring and Lee Bowyer explained his decision to play Igor to the South London Press

“We were only going to play him for 60-70 minutes today, no matter what, my worry was, if I don’t play him today then he isn’t going to play for two weeks. And he’s going to lose fitness. We’ve worked so hard to get his fitness to where it was before, for Luton.

“To lose it for two weeks, then we’re chasing – and I didn’t want to do that. Give him 60-70 minutes today – he’ll have got a hell of a lot out of today, especially on a warm day as well.

“And he’s come through it fine. Was it a gamble? No, he trained fully yesterday. The physio said he was fine. That was my decision. Could it have gone wrong? Yeah. But I think it is a benefit for him now he has got the 60-70 minutes under his belt.”

Good choice from Bowyer to put him out there as he slotted another goal for Charlton after a cool lay off from Joe Aribo which put the Addicks 3-0 up. With the playoffs fast approaching two consistent strikers is what we need and with Igor approaching that reliable status we could well see Championship football at The Valley very soon.
