Final Day Shootout

It’s all set for a huge final day League 1 shootout with no less than 5 clubs in the hunt for automatic promotion!

We know that we’ve got to beat Oldham Athletic, anything other than this and we’ve got no chance at all of finishing in second place. A 6th place finish would actually be more likely if we can’t secure all 3 points at Boundary Park, which I think we will. Unfortunately as much as I hope it will be I don’t think it’ll be enough and all the points we’ve thrown away against teams in similar positions to that that Oldham are in now will cost us automatic promotion back to The Championships, play-offs here we come!

Huddersfield Town are currently in 6th place and they face relegation threatened Exeter City at St James Park, they held us to a 1-1 draw recently. It’s going to be far from easy for The Terriers as The Grecian’s know that a win keeps them in League 1 next season. Should Huddersfield win and all other results go their way it would come down to goal difference, and they’d need a 5 goal swing over Leeds United. This isn’t impossible, but it is unlikely so I think they’ll be in the play-offs for sure.

Swindon Town go to Millwall, a draw and a Leeds defeat would see things very tight and complicated at the top but a single goal defeat would see Leeds clinch 2nd place ahead of The Lions on goals scored I think? Swindon have to win to have any chance of finishing in the automatic promotion places. I think this will end in a draw though so these two will be in the play-offs too, meaning a Millwall verses Charlton play-off final would be possible as long as either side finishes in 4th or 5th, if both sides finish in these positions (or 3rd and 6th) then that would be the semi-final meeting.

For Leeds United it is simple, they win and they’ll finish in 2nd place and return to The Championship. Lose and they could be overtaken by anyone from five, including The Addicks. If they draw and Millwall, Swindon or us fail to win that will be enough, even if we did win and they draw they’d finish second on goal difference.

To put it simply we must win, Leeds lose, Millwall and Swindon draw with each other and Huddersfield fail to win and we’ll finish as runners-up to Norwich City.

If only it was that simple, unfortunately the chances of all these scenarios panning out in our favour aren’t that likely are they?

It’s not a very likely set of scenarios happening is it but while there is hope all we can do is do what we need to. The worst thing would be looking back with regrets at having failed to win when it would have been enough.

You’re right, it wasn’t a very likely scenario but at least we had a go.
