The decision as to whether Charlton can ban Manchester United fans from The Valley will be left to the Premier League who state that Charlton can’t act on their own.

A Premier League spokesman said: ‘Charlton Athletic will no doubt discuss their away allocation for Manchester United, along with stewarding and police arrangements, with their safety advisory group for any future matches. Any ban on away fans would have to be considered by the Premier League board.’ This follows the accusation that a Man Utd fan sexually assaulted a female member of the Charlton staff during last weekends game.

Charlton chief executive Peter Varney said: ‘I have never heard of anything like this at a football match before, and we would like to thank those Manchester United fans who witnessed it, and came forward to make statements to the police.’

Varney also believes that they have been left with very little choice but to ban the Reds fans after three were arrested for encroaching on the pitch. Reports say that a large number of Utd fans surged forward breaking a metal gate and crushing a steward.

He added ‘I think, when we see the reports from the police and the local authority, it will leave us with little alternative but to refuse to sell tickets to Manchester United fans for future games at The Valley. I’d rather have the away end empty than run the risk of further incidents like those we saw on Saturday.’

Have your say on our poll. Are Charlton right to try to ban Manchester Utd’s supporters from the Valley?
