Charlton Athletic have again been preparing for life in the Championship by signing Portuguese U-21 International central defender Jose Semedo.

Alan Pardew has continued his squad building with Jose Semedo becoming his fifth signing of the summer.

Semedo joins the club from Sporting Lisbon on a free contract. He has signed for 4 years at The Valley.

Semedo is a very highly rated Portuguese defender who impressed during the recent U21s tournament.

He is a powerful central defender, who has been likened to Kolo Toure and Marcel Desially. He has never actually played in the Sporting Lisbon first team having spent his youth there and being loaned out since 2004. Last season he impressed while on loan at Cagliari in Italy.

Charlton have got Semedo on a free transfer, and many feel Sporting have slipped on the contractual front. The player is rated at £2m even at his young age. This is good work by the club.

Reports in Portugal suggest this player has tremendous potential and they expect him to do exceptionally well at Charlton.

The summer recruitment drive is now in full swing and Alan Pardew is rumoured to be looking at his goal keeper options next.

Are you pleased with the new signings so far? Who do you think we should try and sign next? Have your say now?

A good young defender he stole the show with some man of the match performances during the group stages of the tournament. Good signing but we have enough defenders. We need midfield options more than anything those followed by a decent keeper please pards

I should think so really, Pardew needs to concentrate on a keeper. I agree with Red Red Robin, you do have enough defenders at present.
