The reports from Skysports.com that Charlton were trying to sign Gary Doherty were true as the Republic of Ireland international has been confirmed as our first summer signing.

Doherty looks set to make his Addicks bow against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday after signing a two-year contract following he was released by Norwich City after they won The League 1 title, this was despite being a regular last season and making it into The League 1 team of the season and finishing third in The Canaries player of the year voting.

Phil Parkinson had to overcome some obstacles to sign the 30-year-old but is happy to have brought in the experienced defender, Parkinson told The Official Website: “He’s an experienced centre-back with great quality and I’m delighted he’s agreed to join us. Of all the centre-backs out there in the summer he was the one I targeted. It’s taken a while to do the deal for various reasons.

“From day one, Gary expressed his interest in coming to Charlton. He wants to be a part of what we hope is going to be a successful season.”

Doherty, also known as “Doc” or “Ginger Pele” will bring in some extra experience at the back and also brings in quality and proven ability at League 1 level.

You know what, I wouldn’t be surprised if the former Luton Town and Tottenham Hotspur defender was named as our skipper following Nicky Bailey’s departure.

I thought to myself last night as the rumour emerged that we might sign Doherty, what a good deal if it comes off…then I thought, well haven’t we got that position already covered…I thought it was not a Sam replacement, then I see tonight Richardson has gone to Southampton for an undisclosed fee ( hope it was a decent fee) and not another player offloaded due to his wages…It seems we have already spent the money, if there was a fee and signed Alan McCormack from Southend…looks Like Parky is actively building his new model army to unleash on League One !!!!

The replacements for those going out are going to have to be pretty good, and find their feet quickly, if we’re going to unleash a good side on league one this season. Doc is a good signing though I must say.
