He may only be a teenager but Addicks defender Grant Basey is already setting his sights on becoming a first team regular, and more.

Injuries to Ben Thatcher, and then Chris Powell handed the 18-year-old his chance and he has taken it, featuring in the last four Addicks matches. This chance might have come quickly, probably quicker than expected but he is now looking to become the latest in a line of footballers to have been given (and taken) a chance at a young age, he also intends to carry on taking it: “It’s all been a bit surreal how quickly I’ve got into the first team – it’s hard to get my head around it,” Grant Basey told the South London Press.

“But I know I’ve just got to keep doing what I’m doing and make sure I improve all the time to stay in the team.”

Showing maturity beyond his young age Grant Basey is not only looking to keep his place but he is hoping that his breakthrough can inspire other youngsters currently at the club (and future stars) to keep going: “When you’re young and these guys make it, it gives you a lot of hope, so hopefully some of the younger guys here will see me and it will spur them on a bit,” Grant Basey added.

  • Charlton Addickt says:

He’s been given a chance and he’s taken it. He is showing great maturity not only with his actions on the pitch but also with his words, so this should inspire others.
