Stephan Andersen is hoping he can keep Dean Kiely on the bench and continue his run of form and spell between the sticks.

‘From my point of view, hopefully I can keep Dean out of the team, it’s going to be very difficult because he is a brilliant goalkeeper and so is Thomas, so it is going to be hard for me to keep them both out for the whole season, but that is my aim.

‘I can learn a lot from Deano and Thomas and that will help me improve, although I don’t think there is an obvious weakness in my game, I just need more experience.

‘Deano has been here for six years and has lots of Premiership experience and that is the main difference between us, but that will come the more games I play.’

‘I can’t afford to make mistakes because Dean and Thomas are right behind me. I need to be on my toes in training and matches and I need to do my best.

‘I’m not sure if one mistake will mean I’m out of the side – you would have to ask the gaffer about that – but I don’t want to make a mistake and find out!’

‘Schmeichel was my idol growing up, I think he’s the best keeper ever.

‘He had it all, great shot stopper, reactions, brilliant kicking and throwing and in one-on-ones. He has been an inspirational figure for me.

‘I spoke with him a few times, he used to own a club in Denmark called Hvidovre where I used to play. And I had a week’s training with him at Aston Villa when I was suspended after I’d got a red card once.’

‘He told me I could do it in the Premiership. If people compare us they compare our throws because he had a great one and mine is quite good.’
